Class A
Rashi’s Daughters and Jewish Women During the Middle Ages

Taught by Beth Banks Cohn, PhD

Rashi’s daughters were rumored to wear tefillin and tallitot as well as study the holy books. One is even reported as acting as a mohel! These events would be considered quite modern even by today’s standards, yet they took place during the High Middle Ages. Did they really happen or is it just fiction? What was life really like for Jewish Women during that time? Were Rashi’s daughters real? Were they the norm or an anomaly? We will explore the world of Jewish Women during the High Middle Ages both in fact and in fiction as we try to draw our own conclusions.
